The return channel is the transfer route from the viewer to the broadcaster, to the programme or to the community. Many routes are possible:

• Telephone
• SMS
• Post
• Internet on the computer
• Internet on mobile devices

A return channel should however also be possible, for communication via an iTV application. The two closely related technology forms are:

• Cable modem either external or integrated into the receiver device, for access to a cable network with return channel compatibility.
• Wireless connection to a DSL router for internet access

The standard internet protocols are suitable protocols.
